The best AI agent security software for Workday agents depends on where the agent acts. If it acts only inside Workday, Workday's own controls (ASOR, Agent Gateway, business process approvals and the agent audit trail) cover most of what you need, and Agent Passport adds independent testing as it reaches your tenant. If the agent also writes to your ERP, payroll provider, ticketing system or email, you need a gateway in front of those calls that applies one rule set and one approver across every system.
We sell that last option. We start with "you may not need us" on purpose, because for an HR agent that answers policy questions and reads data for the person asking, it is the right answer.
Why Workday buyers are reviewing agent security now
On October 13, 2026, at Workday Rising, Workday made its Trusted Agent Platform headless. Agent-Ready Tools (Workday's Model Context Protocol tools), Custom Agents, Developer Agent, Agent Harness and Workday Data Cloud all became generally available. In Workday's words, Agent-Ready Tools give "any agent that supports MCP an approved way to read Workday data and take action."
That changes the buying question. Until this year, most agents touching Workday were Workday's own. Now your developers can build agents in LangChain, start them from Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and point them at live HR and finance data. Workday's answer is that "Every agent, whether it's built by Workday, a customer, or partner, works under the same Workday permissions, approvals, and audit trails." That is true inside Workday. The open question for a buyer is everything the agent does next.
Five options compared
| Option | What it controls | Where it stops | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workday native controls (ASOR, Agent Gateway, approvals, audit trail) | Agent registration and identity, runtime authorization, rate limits, business policy boundaries, approvals and change history inside Workday | Data after it leaves Workday, and calls the agent makes to other systems | Every Workday customer, as the baseline. ASOR is included in the core subscription |
| Workday Agent Passport with Cisco AI Defense | Pre-production testing for prompt injection and data leakage, a signed record mapped to public standards, runtime monitoring | Scope is agents running in Workday. Early access in the second half of 2026 | Teams that want third-party attestation, especially Cisco customers |
| Cisco AI Defense on its own | Model and application testing and runtime protection across your AI estate | Detection and filtering, not a named approver on a specific business action | Security teams standardizing on one AI security vendor |
| Microsoft Agent 365 | Inventory, identity and monitoring for agents in the Microsoft ecosystem | Licensed per user, and focused on agents that integrate with Microsoft's stack | Companies whose Workday agents are built in Copilot Studio or Microsoft Foundry |
| AgentShield | Rules on the arguments of each tool call, named approvers, outbound data inspection and one audit log across Workday and other systems | Does not replace Workday security groups or see changes made inside Workday by people | Agents that read Workday data and write to ERP, payroll, banking, ticketing or email |
Two rows are already paid for by most Workday customers. If you run Microsoft agents, our Microsoft Agent 365 alternatives guide covers that side in more depth.
How to choose for Workday agents
Does the agent write, or only read? A read-only agent that answers benefits questions for the requester has no action to gate. Narrow security groups and outbound data checks are enough. The moment an agent can change direct deposit, compensation, supplier banking or security roles, you need a second person on those calls.
Delegate or ambient? Workday separates skills that act for a user from ambient skills that "take action without human user interaction." An ambient skill has nobody in the conversation to notice a strange request, so its write tools deserve the tightest rules.
Does data leave Workday? An agent that reads salary bands, bank details or Social Security numbers and then posts to Slack, opens a ticket or calls another model has moved regulated data somewhere Workday does not watch. HR agents can read the same pay data an employee would want before they negotiate a raise, which is exactly why compensation fields need redaction on the way out.
How many systems does the agent span? One agent that reads a supplier in Workday, changes it in your ERP and emails the supplier needs the same rule and approver on all three calls. Three tools with three policies drift apart within a quarter.
What will your auditors ask for? Workday's View AI Agent User Audit Trail separates actions by the user from actions on behalf of the user. For self-built agents, though, the analytics on agent input and output requests exist only for Workday-built agents. If internal audit wants the prompt, the decision and the approver for each sensitive call, plan where that AI agent audit trail lives.
What Workday shipped and when
| Date | Release | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| June 2, 2026 | Agent Passport announced, Cisco AI Defense as launch tester, plus new developer tools | Independent testing becomes part of the Workday story, with general availability projected before the end of 2026 |
| October 13, 2026 | Agent-Ready Tools, Custom Agents, Developer Agent, Agent Harness and Data Cloud generally available | Outside agents can read and act on Workday data through MCP |
| Late 2026 | Agent Context Service in early access | Agents get only the context a task needs |
| Early 2027 | Grounded Reasoning in early access | Requests checked against company policy, business processes and tenant data before an agent acts |
Grounded Reasoning is the piece to watch. Workday's own release says large language models "can misapply HR policies even when the correct policy is in front of them." Until that check reaches your tenant, a permitted but wrong request relies on your business process approvals. We explain how to set a human approval gate for AI agents on the few calls where a mistake costs money.
Budgeting for Workday agent security
Workday meters AI agents with Flex Credits, an annual consumption pool, and does not publish a dollar price per credit. ASOR needs no extra SKU. Agent-Ready Tools, Custom Agents and Developer Agent are generally available in Workday Extend AI. None of that pays for controls outside Workday, so keep a separate line for outbound inspection, approvals on calls to other systems and cross-system evidence. Size that line by the number of write tools your agents call, which is usually small, rather than by employee count.
If the same finance team also runs SAP, the budget conversation is similar, and our SAP Joule agent security page shows where that platform's controls stop.
When you need nothing extra
Plenty of Workday customers should stop at the native controls. If your agents are Workday-built, act only inside Workday, and every sensitive change already goes through a business process approval, adding a gateway gives you a second log and little else. Register agents in ASOR, review the All AI Agent Accounts report, keep tool execution groups narrow and look at the agent audit trail every month. Revisit the decision when the first self-built agent starts writing to a system outside Workday.
Does Workday have built-in AI agent security?
Yes. Workday registers agents in ASOR, gives each one an Agent System User, routes every agentic tool call through Agent Gateway for runtime authorization and rate limiting, applies business process approvals and records an audit trail. Those controls cover actions inside Workday. They do not follow data or actions into other systems.
Is Agent Passport available yet?
Workday announced Agent Passport on June 2, 2026, with early access planned for the second half of 2026 and general availability projected before the end of 2026. Cisco AI Defense is the only testing partner named so far. Ask your Workday account team whether your tenant is in early access before you plan around it.
Do I need a separate tool for external agents connected to Workday?
Only if they write to systems outside Workday or move sensitive data out. External agents register in ASOR and act through their own Agent System User, so Workday controls their Workday calls. A separate gateway pays off when the same agent changes records in ERP, payroll or email, where Workday cannot apply its approvals.
What should a Workday agent security tool log for SOX?
For every sensitive call, log the agent identity, the user it acted for, the tool and arguments, the policy decision, the approver and the time. Workday's audit trail records changes inside Workday. For self-built agents, keep the request and decision record yourself, retained on the same schedule as your other financial controls evidence.
